My Mom’s Lover Stopped By
There came my mom’s moaning voice—that let me know they had begun to fuck. Her voice was followed by a slapping noise, like someone whacking a ball with a tennis racket.
Pop music blasted out of my cell phone beside me while I sat in the kitchen huddled over the text book I was perusing, trying to make sense of the assignment I’d been wrestling with since I returned from school. Mom wasn’t home yet. There was only me and nobody else to keep company. Not that I was complaining—this is usually how it has been since she and dad broke up a year ago. Dad had since relocated to a new state and gotten engaged to a new woman, whereas mom was having fun playing the fields, or so she said.
Mom seemed to enjoy playing the fields, which was the reason why she and my dad split. Dad couldn’t handle her illicit activities, and apparently mom hadn’t intended to stop anytime soon. Such was the way things ended.
The doorbell rang. I stopped my music, dropped my pencil, and went to see who it was. I looked through the peephole and my face went sallow with disappointment at who I saw standing in my porch. I could make like I’m asleep and not answer, except I know the fellow would likely stick around longer. I groaned under my breath and then turned the lock and opened the door.
The black man’s name was Elwood. He was in his thirties (compared to me who’d recently turned fourteen) and was dating my mom. He wore a leather jacket and a French cap. He looked like he’d just left a nightclub or was on his way to one; I could smell his cologne.
“Hiya kid,” he smiled.
“It’s Brad.”
“Oh yeah, Brad; my bad. Is your mom home, Brad?”
“No, she’s not.” I glanced at my watch. “Probably not till another hour. Why don’t you give her a call?”
“I would, except my phone battery died on me while I was coming here.” I reached into his pocket and took out his phone and charger as if to show me his current situation. “How about I come in and wait on her, and also charge my phone too.”
I thought for a moment. I would have preferred not to let him inside—I would have preferred if he went down to the next block and wait for my mom at the park—but I knew she’d be upset if she returned home and found out I’d been giving bad attitude vibes. Besides, I figured I could use some company until she got home.
“Yeah sure,” I opened the door wide enough for him to enter.
